My Picks for the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16

So I woke up this morning with no idea what to write or whether or not I would write at all, and instead continue my quest to beat Skyrim. It’s so hard to get away from all those side missions. And guess what, some lucky bastard gets a copy of it for making the top 3 of the DouBle B ReviewS Bracket Challenge. That was the situation when I got a text from my sister Corrie:

Have to fill out 2nd chance sweet 16 bracket for work. Need advice…could u poss email some by end of way day to ______? Please please!xo

I immediately treated this text with the utmost seriousness and knew as her brother I had to step up and not let her down, to the best of my ability.

Everything you see after the jump is basically what I sent to my sister in the email at 2:43pm today, which gave her a two hour window to properly plan her picks with my added insight.

Hey sis, I was gonna write you a simple email now It’s turned into a full on post. Enjoy!

My best advice on most of these games is just like the title to LWhitta‘s top bracket entry in this years DouBle B Reviews Bracket Challenge, which is “Going with the Gut“. It’s March Madness after all and you never know what’s going to happen, buuuuuut here are a few insights from the guy who is firmly in last place in his own bracket challenge.

Kentucky vs IndianaKentucky is my pick to win it alll, but this is a rematch of the best college basketball game we’ve seen this year, bar none. Indiana gave the Wildcats their only regular season loss with the Christian Watford trey ball at the buzzer. I watched this with Max and I remember telling him “I want to see a buzzer beater” and Watford stepped up nicely. My big concern with UK is that although they are by far the most talented team in the tourney, they are also very young. All in all this game is either going to be extremely epic like the first meeting and a toss up, or UK is going to get revenge by BEATING THE LIVING SHIT OUT OF THE HOOSIERS. If  the latter occurs I think UK marches to the title.

Baylor Bears vs Xavier Musketeers – On the same day Max and I saw Indiana shock Kentucky, there was also infamous Xavier and Cincinnati brawl, and amazingly both recovered to reach the sweet 16. Although Baylor, along with UNC and Syracuse might be the only teams left in the field who are able to matchup physically with Kentucky , I think Xavier is going to “Zip up” Da Bears. Prove me wrong Perry Jones III. I would absolutely love to see that (he’s ridiculous).

Michigan State Spartans vs Louisville Cardinals – As much as I want Seattle product and Big East Tournament MVP Peyton Siva to will his Cards to pull it off the upset, I think Tom Izzo‘s Spartans are just too damn physical for Louisville. I’m gonna go with Michigan State here, but hope otherwise.

Marquette Golden Eagles vs Florida Gators – This ones gonna be what they call a “doozey”. With the way Florida dismantled the Virginia Cavaliers and “CinderellaNorfolk St Spartans by an average of 30 points, it’s hard to choose against them. But I’m gonna go with my own advice of “Going with the Gut” and choose Marquette. I’ve turned into a big fan of this team since they took out my Huskies with a last second shot in Madison Square Garden. Plus they’ve got an awesome coach in Buzz Williams, who became one of my favorite coaches in America after he danced on the center court following his teams victory over West Virginia in Morgantown, infuriating the fans.  And on a side note: Do you think the Huskies would have gotten clobbered as bad as West Virginia did by Gonzaga? HELL NO THEY WOULDN’T HAVE. I’m not saying they should have gotten in, just that they are a lot better than a lot of the teams that did.

Syracuse Orangemen vs Wisconsin BadgersCUSE. They are too deep and talented to go down to the Badgers, who are tough, but not tough enough.

Cincinnati Bearcats vs Ohio State Buckeyes – Cross State matchups are always intriguing, and this one is no different. They don’t have the hatred for each other that Xavier and Cincinnati bring to the Crosstown Shootout, not even close. In fact, these two schools, despite being separated by a mere two hours of travel, have only played each other once in the past 50 years. Maybe this will get them playing each other again. Maybe not, I don’t really give a shit, we already have The Crosstown Shootout (which is awesome btw).

One thing that has stood out to me so in the last couple of weeks is how good the Bearcats actually are. I mean the whole “inspired by coming together” bullshit had to rub off after a week or two, you know what I mean? We already know they are physical, judging by Yancy Gates fierce right hand (sorta joking, not really, I mean would you really want to get rough with that guy after seeing that?), but they also have really tough guards, which can take you a long ways.

Bottom Line: I think this is gonna be a fantastic game, with OSU ever so slightly getting the edge, but don’t be shocked if the Bearcats take them out. I think the Buckeyes are a little soft.

North Carolina Tar Heels vs Ohio Bobcats – Even with the fact that they may be without point guard Kendall Marshall hanging over their heads. The Tar Heels should still take care of business, but if they don’t get Marshall back I don’t see them doing much after that. They have one thing going for them: STACKED AT EVERY OTHER POSITION. Buuuuuuuuuut like Ohio State, I think this team, including Harrison Barnes, are pillow soft. Oh yeah, another thing I haven’t said on this site: I THOUGHT ROY WILLIAMS WAS A COMPLETE COWARD for pulling his bench to the locker room with 14.2 seconds left in their blowout loss to Florida State. I’m not saying he’s always a coward, but that day he was. Just let rampaging Florida State fans trample you like a man, their basketball team did it twice this year.

Kansas Jayhawks vs NC State Wolfpack – No upset here, not that NC State is a slouch. Kansas coach Bill Self has done an incredible job in what was supposed to be a down year. Rock Chalk Jayhawk indeed.

So thats it. As you can see, outside of Xavier over Baylor, no upsets predicted, which if it works out will make for a prestigious Elite 8.
