DouBleB’s 2012 Oscar Picks – Music (Original Song)

A day after picking the most difficult category so far I expected my pick for Music (Original Song) to be a breeze. Hell, there’s only two nominees, both of which I have seen,  and I came into it thinking I already knew which one I was going to pick. But that’s simply not the case, both songs are fantastic and I’m suddenly having trouble deciding which one I like best.

Disclaimer: I have not seen every single one of this year’s nominated movies, and I probably won’t for reasons that I don’t want to waste my time watching shit that was manufactured  just to get Oscar consideration (I’m looking at a specific movie involving two former Oscar winners). It’s not like I watched every bowl eligible college football team before making my picks. If you don’t like it you can file a complaint here.

“Man or Muppet” from “[amazon_link id=”B006JTS5OO” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]The Muppets[/amazon_link]” Music and Lyric by Bret McKenzie

Both times when I saw this in the theater I couldn’t help laughing, and note that in the actual movie they don’t have those voice overs. It was written by Bret McKenzie, best known for being half of the musical comedy duo [amazon_link id=”B003L7DK74″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Flight of the Conchords[/amazon_link], along with Jemaine Clement. James Bobin, who with McKenzie and Clement co-created the Conchords HBO show, directed The Muppets. So what I’m basically saying is you should check out Flight of the Conchords.

“Real in Rio” from “[amazon_link id=”B004HO6I4W” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Rio[/amazon_link]” Music by Sergio Mendes and Carlinhos Brown Lyric by Siedah Garrett

Rio was a surprise for me. I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did after seeing what I thought were very generic looking trailers. “Real in Rio” is the opening and ending song to the film and it gets better with each listen. I just found an interesting connection between these two movies that’s one of those obvious things I should have known before: Jemaine Clement, who I just mentioned as being half of Flight of the Conchords, voices the main antagonist, Nigel.

Soooo….. wonder what kind of competitive elements are going around the Conchords camp right now? Are they making their friends choose between The Muppets and Rio?

DouBleB’s 2012 Oscar Picks – Animated Short Film

“Real in Rio” made a late run, and is probably a better song as far as technicalities are concerned,  but “Man or Muppet” pretty much earned my pick even before I heard it was nominated. I’ve been singing or humming it every day since it first blessed my ears. Just ask Rika.
