DouBleB’s 2012 Oscar Picks – Cinematography

The cinematography field is loaded with talent, as always, including the man who was director of photography for a Vanilla Ice film.

Disclaimer: I have not seen every single one of this year’s nominated movies, and I probably won’t for reasons that I don’t want to waste my time watching shit that was manufactured  just to get Oscar consideration (I’m looking at a specific movie involving two former Oscar winners). It’s not like I watched every bowl eligible college football team before making my picks. If you don’t like it you can file a complaint here.

For my other picks go to my Oscar Picks Hub.

“[amazon_link id="B005LL4U54" target="_blank" container="" container_class="" ]The Artist[/amazon_link]” Guillaume Schiffman

Schiffman has previously worked with ‘The Artist’ director Michel Hazanavicius on the OSS 117 films. I mean, c’mon he was the cinematographer for a doozie of a black and white movie made in 2012, how could he not be nominated?

“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” Jeff Cronenweth

Jeff Cronenweth and David Fincher have collaborated on [amazon_link id="B001992NUQ" target="_blank" container="" container_class="" ]Fight Club[/amazon_link], [amazon_link id="B0034G4P7Q" target="_blank" container="" container_class="" ]The Social Network[/amazon_link], and now [amazon_link id="B0015DROBO" target="_blank" container="" container_class="" ]The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo[/amazon_link]. His father, Jordan Cronenweth was cinematographer for a little film called [amazon_link id="B000UBMWG4" target="_blank" container="" container_class="" ]BLADE RUNNER[/amazon_link]. Wow. How bout them apples?

“[amazon_link id="B003Y5H5HE" target="_blank" container="" container_class="" ]Hugo[/amazon_link]” Robert Richardson
richardson5 DouBleB’s 2012 Oscar Picks – CinematographyRichardson is handling the cinematography for the live action adaptation of Max Brooks’ zombie apocalypse novel [amazon_link id="0307346617" target="_blank" container="" container_class="" ]World War Z[/amazon_link], hopefully that’s a good thing. He us best known for his work with Quentin Tarantino as director of photography on [amazon_link id="B002T9H2L0" target="_blank" container="" container_class="" ]Inglourious Basterds[/amazon_link] (yes, that’s how that movie is spelled) and both [amazon_link id="B001BR5F4C" target="_blank" container="" container_class="" ]Kill Bill [/amazon_link]movies, but if you look at his IMDb resume you will see it littered with several classics of the 1980′s and 90′s.  Movie Geeks United conducted a one hour interview that you can find here.

“[amazon_link id="B005HV6Y5W" target="_blank" container="" container_class="" ]The Tree of Life[/amazon_link]” Emmanuel Lubezki

As cinematographer for a number of impressive films, including C[amazon_link id="B001YV502C" target="_blank" container="" container_class="" ]hildren of Men[/amazon_link], [amazon_link id="B000OLRM2O" target="_blank" container="" container_class="" ]Ali[/amazon_link], [amazon_link id="B003R7J0LI" target="_blank" container="" container_class="" ]Y Tu Mama Tambien[/amazon_link], and my personal favorite of his, [amazon_link id="B000I0QM0E" target="_blank" container="" container_class="" ]Sleepy Hollow[/amazon_link], Lubezki has a diversified portfolio. This is his fifth Oscar nomination.

“[amazon_link id="B00457WZEI" target="_blank" container="" container_class="" ]War Horse[/amazon_link]” Janusz Kaminski

When Jausz Kaminski was handling director of photography duties for the Vanilla Ice lead [amazon_link id="6302261589" target="_blank" container="" container_class="" ]Cool as Ice[/amazon_link], do you really think he was expecting he would be working  with Steven Spielberg on [amazon_link id="B0068FYZIO" target="_blank" container="" container_class="" ]Schindlers List[/amazon_link] a mere two years later?

I really hope this is a great sign for how good World War Z is going to look. It’s definitely not Richardson’s fault if the movie sucks. That falls on the same guy who directed Quantum of Solace. This is the second time I pick Hugo, as it also took home the “Director” prize.
